John 6

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias), and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs he had performed by healing the sick. Then Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat down with his disciples. The Jewish Passover Festival was near.

When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.

Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!”

Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up, “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?”

Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.”There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.

When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.

After the people saw the sign Jesus performed, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.” Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.

Jesus Walks on the Water

When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake, where they got into a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum. By now it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them. A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough. When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water; and they were frightened. But he said to them, “It is I; don’t be afraid.” Then they were willing to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading.

The next day the crowd that had stayed on the opposite shore of the lake realized that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not entered it with his disciples, but that they had gone away alone. Then some boats from Tiberias landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. Once the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum in search of Jesus.

Jesus the Bread of Life

When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, “Rabbi, when did you get here?”

Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.”

Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”

Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”

So they asked him, “What sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do? Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’”

Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

“Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”

Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”

At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”

“Stop grumbling among yourselves,”Jesus answered. “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day. It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’  Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me. No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father. Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”

Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”

Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.

Many Disciples Desert Jesus

On hearing it, many of his disciples said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”

Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you? Then what if you see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before! The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit  and life. Yet there are some of you who do not believe.”For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him. He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.”

From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.

“You do not want to leave too, do you?”Jesus asked the Twelve.

Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”

Then Jesus replied, “Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!” (He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.)

Devotional

“Way Maker, Miracle Worker, Promise Keeper, Light in the Darkness”—this is who Jesus is. John beautifully captures this through Jesus’ miracles. He fed 5,000 (John 6:1-9), walked on water to comfort His disciples (John 6:16-21), and declared Himself as the Bread of Life (John 6:35).

Way Maker: Jesus is always preparing us for miracles. When He asked Philip about feeding the crowd, He was already planning the miracle, teaching us that He is the way (John 6:1-9, Isaiah 43:19-21).

Miracle Worker: Jesus fed 5,000 with just a few loaves and fish, inviting His disciples into His miracle. He still works through us today, inviting us to be part of His plans (John 6:8-11, Psalms 77:14, Psalms 86:10).

Promise Keeper: In the storm, Jesus walked on water to calm His disciples, reminding us that we are never alone—He always watches over us (John 6:16-21, Mark 6:48).

Light in the Darkness: Jesus is the Bread of Life, offering Himself as our ultimate source of nourishment and fulfillment. He promises that those who come to Him will never hunger or thirst again (John 6:35, John 6:41).

Jesus is your Way Maker, Miracle Worker, Promise Keeper, and Light in the Darkness. He longs to bring peace and fullness to your life. Trust Him. He’s always at work in you.

Are you relying on Jesus and experiencing the abundant life He offers in the areas where He is calling you to grow deeper?

  1. I firmly believe that Jesus is always working behind the scenes in any storm of our lives. He orchestrates events to fall into place for our fulfilling life. As a child of royalty—our King, I tell myself that He is so so good to us. I continually talk with Him daily and tell Him that He spoils us so with all our many blessings. Whatever we ask of Him in His Name, He gives to us. Life with Jesus is the only option for us to live a fulfilled life on this earth.

    1. Lord Jesus You describe so perfectly that You are the Bread of Life in John 6. Thank you. For I am reminded of Psalms 34:8 in which You invite us to taste and see that the Lord is good. Oh You are so good. A good good Father. Thank you Lord for eternity with You. Amen.

  2. I know Jesus is always there , he is indeed a Way Maker, a promise keeper , a Shelter in Time of Storms and A Light in The Darkness. Bless it Be The Name of the Lord, Amen

  3. I believe that many times we start following Jesus because we need help in a specific area of our lives. The people in this passage wanted to keep consuming the bread Jesus had given them, but their true need was spiritual. Sadly, many did not understand that Jesus is the Bread of Life. I think this happens to all of us—we come to Christ with a need, but we often lack the passion to know Him more and realize that He can do so much more than just meet our immediate needs.

    1. I need my Lord and Savior everyday. I pray and thank him for his blessing everyday. Praise the Lord and Amen!!🙏✝🕊📖

  4. Jesus is everything we need. He is so trustworthy. His thoughts are so much higher than our thoughts. His ways are so much greater than ours. His promises are eternal. We can trust Him to guide every step we take.

  5. What love is this that God would give us Jesus so we may have eternal life? Do any of us truly understand the future that never ends once we say “yes” to Jesus?

  6. Desiring to go deeper in step with Him and to be led and GO where He wants me to go. Asking for His direction, clarity, wisdom discernment etc being careful to not become paralyzed by indecision. Wanting to know that I know I’m doing His will and not my own. I’ve done that for so long….it doesn’t work out. I want to continually be fully submitted and surrendered and don’t want to MAN the wheel house anymore.

  7. What I love so much (and struggle at the same time) about this passage is that relying on the Lord to believe in Him only comes from Him. It’s obvious we can’t take credit for anything that the Lord does through us. But we need the Lord to even come to Him in the first place and believe. The walk of a Christian in every aspect points to Christ.

    1. Enabled by the Father -it is not by me
The father drew me to Christ -my only job is to believe in the one He sent. HE will enable me

  8. Father, thank you for calling out to me. May I not give up, give in, turn back or walk away. Lord Jesus, hold me tightly. Holy Spirit, fill me. Now, let’s be going and doing and working for the kingdom.

  9. Lord Jesus,

Thank You for being the Way, the Truth, and the Life! For so many years you have guided my life and provided exactly what we need. I need no more than to fall on my knees in worship and adoration of Your holiness and perfection. This day I focus my eyes on You, Lord Jesus!

  10. I have been through some very dark times. It was so easy to cast God aside and even momentarily question his existence. Yet, he never let me go, but nurtured me through the storms. I was never alone. He is my light in the darkness

  11. Verse 63: “The Spirit alone gives eternal life. Human effort accomplishes nothing.”
🙏🏻That we rely only on His power to be transformed and sanctified, and to share and model the Gospel to others!

Verse 66: “At this point many of his disciples turned away and deserted him.”
😔 Sometimes is so easy to abandon our faith when we don’t understand or accept the will of God. This chapter reminds us on WHO is the one guiding our life: Jesus, who says to us, “Don’t be afraid. I am here!” 😊

  12. Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you.“

Jesus, help me to savor and love You for YOU, not for what I think You can do for me. May my hands and life prioritize eternal work that has a Kingdom impact, not just the items I want to check off my to do list.

  13. My daily prayer is to be less focused on the temporal and more focused on the God who supplies spiritual life more abundantly. Thank you Jesus for being our hope and life itself!🙏🏾

  14. Father, help me believe and trust you more today than ever before. Help me desire you more, know that you are sufficeint, be satisfied with your provision and experience the presence of the Holy Spirit.

  15. If I had heard Jesus’s comments to eat His flesh and drink His blood, would I have believed? So glad we have the written word and knowledge of the spiritual meaning. Thank you God for sending Jesus!

  16. Thank you Jesus for being our miracle worker, way maker, promise keeper and light in the darkness. For without you we would be totally lost. Thank you for putting my sins in the depth of the sea.

  17. What a beautiful message. Lord since the beginning its always been you. You called us, you redeemed us, you saved us. You are the bread of life. In you we will never be thirsty. Lord i pray that my faith in you grows everyday. These people saw your wonders, they saw you and interacted with you yet some still didn’t believe.

  18. You know what I like about this devotional is that when it said Does this offend you is also reminder on how much we are being self centered to God’s word and that we are not even in the meaning on how we can understand God because we are not taking his word to heart, we treat it like it is the all black sand in Hawaii than Moondust because God is the Moon and the Sun.

  19. God Sent His Son…
Jesus came for me and my sinful self…
He has promised to stay by my side and be my Help in all tbings…
    I believe!
