John 7

Jesus Goes to the Festival of Tabernacles

After this, Jesus went around in Galilee. He did not want to go about in Judea because the Jewish leaders there were looking for a way to kill him. But when the Jewish Festival of Tabernacles was near, Jesus’ brothers said to him, “Leave Galilee and go to Judea, so that your disciples there may see the works you do. No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world.” For even his own brothers did not believe in him.

Therefore Jesus told them, “My time is not yet here; for you any time will do. The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify that its works are evil. You go to the festival. I am not  going up to this festival, because my time has not yet fully come.” After he had said this, he stayed in Galilee.

However, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went also, not publicly, but in secret. Now at the festival the Jewish leaders were watching for Jesus and asking, “Where is he?”

Among the crowds there was widespread whispering about him. Some said, “He is a good man.”

Others replied, “No, he deceives the people.” But no one would say anything publicly about him for fear of the leaders.

Jesus Teaches at the Festival

Not until halfway through the festival did Jesus go up to the temple courts and begin to teach. The Jews there were amazed and asked, “How did this man get such learning without having been taught?”

Jesus answered, “My teaching is not my own. It comes from the one who sent me. Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own. Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory, but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him. Has not Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?”

“You are demon-possessed,” the crowd answered. “Who is trying to kill you?”

Jesus said to them, “I did one miracle, and you are all amazed. Yet, because Moses gave you circumcision (though actually it did not come from Moses, but from the patriarchs), you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath. Now if a boy can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, why are you angry with me for healing a man’s whole body on the Sabbath? Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.”

Division Over Who Jesus Is

At that point some of the people of Jerusalem began to ask, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill? Here he is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying a word to him. Have the authorities really concluded that he is the Messiah? But we know where this man is from; when the Messiah comes, no one will know where he is from.”

Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts, cried out, “Yes, you know me, and you know where I am from. I am not here on my own authority, but he who sent me is true. You do not know him, but I know him because I am from him and he sent me.”

At this they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come. Still, many in the crowd believed in him. They said, “When the Messiah comes, will he perform more signs than this man?”

The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering such things about him. Then the chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest him.

Jesus said, “I am with you for only a short time, and then I am going to the one who sent me. You will look for me, but you will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come.”

The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we cannot find him? Will he go where our people live scattered among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks? What did he mean when he said, ‘You will look for me, but you will not find me,’and ‘Where I am, you cannot come’?”

On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”  By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.

On hearing his words, some of the people said, “Surely this man is the Prophet.”

Others said, “He is the Messiah.”

Still others asked, “How can the Messiah come from Galilee? Does not Scripture say that the Messiah will come from David’s descendants and from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?” Thus the people were divided because of Jesus. Some wanted to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him.

Unbelief of the Jewish Leaders

Finally the temple guards went back to the chief priests and the Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring him in?”

“No one ever spoke the way this man does,” the guards replied.

“You mean he has deceived you also?” the Pharisees retorted. “Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him? No! But this mob that knows nothing of the law—there is a curse on them.”

Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who was one of their own number, asked, “Does our law condemn a man without first hearing him to find out what he has been doing?”

They replied, “Are you from Galilee, too? Look into it, and you will find that a prophet does not come out of Galilee.”

[The earliest manuscripts and many other ancient witnesses do not have John 7:53—8:11. A few manuscripts include these verses, wholly or in part, after John 7:36, John 21:25, Luke 21:38or Luke 24:53.]

Then they all went home,

Reality TV shows are some of the most watched TV today. We pick favorites, vote by text, and follow social media accounts in the hopes our pick wins. From crowds voting on his character, Jesus surprising everyone with an unexpected “mic drop” moment, and a judge saving him from final elimination, John 7 is packed full of Reality TV moments. The vote wasn’t if he was the greatest performer, political candidate, or entertainer but whether he is the Messiah. Is Jesus their long awaited anointed one? Will he save them? Will he make them whole?

Jesus said in John 7:28-29, “You know me, and you know where I come from. But I have not come of my own accord. He who sent me is true, and him you do not know. I know him, for I come from him, and he sent me.” Their votes don’t make him the Messiah, God does. Jesus also said in John 7:37-38, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” Their votes don’t save him, Jesus saves them.

This is where the Reality TV show metaphor breaks down and we realize the truth. He isn’t the contestant, we are. He has been watching our lives, rooting for us, arguing against the accuser, and giving us help when we need it most. He is the judge who decides our fate, declares our victory, and throws the best after party.

In what ways have you judged Jesus? How have you shown your belief in Him?

  1. Father God, thank you for being active in our lives.

Here we are, Lord Jesus, use us for your Father’s glory and honor.

Holy Spirit fill us to the overflowing.

May your saints praise, worship, and share the good news throughout this day.

And, LORD, if you grant us tomorrow, let’s repeat.

Boldly approaching the throne room by and through the name of Jesus Christ,

    Amen.

    1. Waking in His truth and committed to serving the Father His way has been the fruit of my belief in Him. I pray that I wouldn’t question His purpose or plans but simply follow Him!

      1. I believe that the Lord has great things for my life. I will follow him and take his lead. Praise the Lord and Amen!!🙏✝🕊📖

  2. Thanks Bo. Answering your questions:
In what ways have you judged Jesus? I have judged that that Jesus is the Son of God. He saved me from myself.

How have you shown your belief in Him? I truly have tried to be more like Him in serving and loving others. I wasn’t always this way. I am changed forever.

  3. My Heavenly Father, THANK YOU for your presence in my life. I am truly grateful that your ways are NOT like mine. But everyday I try to be a better person than I was yesterday. THANK YOU for leading and guiding me. Amen and Amen 🙏

  4. I thank God for sending His Son, Jesus to save me from my sins. I agree with Him that I am a sinner and needed the blood of Christ to wash me clean. I agree with Him that Jesus is the only way back to a holy and righteous God! Thank you for being the Messiah Jesus! Amen

  5. Jesus knows the perfect time for everything … He also has a plan much more perfect than anything I can construct. As He said – For you, any time will do. But “any time” isn’t always God’s time.

Lord, please help me to trust Your timing and as I make my plans, please direct my steps as Your Word promises.

  6. Though questions today. I believe that God sent his son Jesus to us to show us and provide for us the way to Him. Yet, do my actions reflect this belief? Is my life that different from a non believer? I think it is. On a good day, I clearly see all the false promises this world offers. On other days I am tempted and fall into old patterns of thinking.

Father, help me to see life from your perspective. Give me strength and courage to live out your purpose. My greatest desire is to bring glory to you.

  7. I have “judged” Him on both ends of the spectrum in my thoughts and attitudes. I know His way is just so in the end I am thankful that He is God and I am not. Praise the Lord for He is good and His mercies endure forever.

  8. Today I will trust you Father, by pointing people to you, doing your will and giving you glory. I may be attacked and anger the enemy, but my hope is that many will believe in Jesus today.

  9. Jesus is gentle and lowly in heart. I was saved when I professed Jesus as Lord and believed in my heart that God the Father raised him from the dead. Once Jesus had me, He never let me go. I believe without a doubt that Jesus will never let me go.

  10. God is just and loving. I did lose count on how I judged Jesus because the bigger picture is that I had took the fact that I treated God like a genie and that is not really fair as we are self centered. I have shown my belief to him yes and that part is true, because as I seen The Truman Show the movie with Peter Weir as the director that God is watching us like the father of Truman Burbank as Truman’s father. The point I took from the movie is that Truman’s father is just like God the Father watching us.

  11. Asking God to help me to not judge others, whether it be judging by their deeds or their appearance.
