John 8

Read John 8

John 8

but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them. The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. Now in the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”]]

I Am the Light of the World

Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” So the Pharisees said to him, “You are bearing witness about yourself; your testimony is not true.” Jesus answered, “Even if I do bear witness about myself, my testimony is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going, but you do not know where I come from or where I am going. You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one. Yet even if I do judge, my judgment is true, for it is not I alone who judge, but I and the Father  who sent me.  In your Law it is written that the testimony of two people is true.  I am the one who bears witness about myself, and the Father who sent me bears witness about me.” They said to him therefore, “Where is your Father?” Jesus answered, “You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also.”  These words he spoke in the treasury, as he taught in the temple; but no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.

So he said to them again, “I am going away, and you will seek me, and you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.”  So the Jews said, “Will he kill himself, since he says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?” He said to them, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. I told you that you would die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am he you will die in your sins.” So they said to him, “Who are you?” Jesus said to them, “Just what I have been telling you from the beginning. I have much to say about you and much to judge, but he who sent me is true, and I declare to the world what I have heard from him.” They did not understand that he had been speaking to them about the Father. So Jesus said to them, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own authority, but speak just as the Father taught me. And he who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him.” As he was saying these things, many believed in him.

The Truth Will Set You Free

So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” They answered him, “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?”

Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave  to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. I know that you are offspring of Abraham; yet you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you. I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard from your father.”

You Are of Your Father the Devil

They answered him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would be doing the works Abraham did, but now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did. You are doing the works your father did.” They said to him, “We were not born of sexual immorality. We have one Father—even God.” Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and I am here. I came not of my own accord, but he sent me. Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word. You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me. Which one of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? Whoever is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God.”

Before Abraham Was, I Am

The Jews answered him, “Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?” Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon, but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me. Yet I do not seek my own glory; there is One who seeks it, and he is the judge. Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.” The Jews said to him, “Now we know that you have a demon! Abraham died, as did the prophets, yet you say, ‘If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death.’ Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? And the prophets died! Who do you make yourself out to be?” Jesus answered, “If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’ But you have not known him. I know him. If I were to say that I do not know him, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and I keep his word. Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day. He saw it and was glad.” So the Jews said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?” Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.” So they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.

Jesus’ words in John 8 challenged the Jewish leaders in profound ways—and they continue to challenge us today. This passage offers powerful truths that reveal whether we are “truly disciples” of Jesus:

  1. Acknowledge we are all sinners. As followers of Christ, our lives should point people to His love and forgiveness—not condemn them for their sins.
  2. Reflect the light of the world. Our lives should shine with the hope and truth of Jesus’ promise: “I am the light of the world.”
  3. Believe in the eternal “I AM.” Jesus declared Himself the great “I AM” of the Old Testament—the eternal God. We must live in full belief and alignment with this truth.
  4. Live in the freedom of truth. Sin enslaves us, but Jesus sets us free. Walk in the freedom that comes from believing in Him.
  5. Recognize Jesus in our lives. The Jewish leaders failed to see Jesus as the Messiah. Is our relationship with Him so close that we recognize His work, hear His voice, and live in obedience?
  6. Give God the glory He deserves. Are we living to glorify God? Keeping His word ensures that we will never see death but have eternal life.

  1. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed! What an astounding statement! What a glorious truth!

    1. The Lord will set me free. He is my light in a world of darkness. PRAISE THE LORD AND AMEN!!📖🕊✝🙏

  2. This is a great reminder to always stand and walk with God and to always be in constant repentance. We should especially believe in God because of his mercy, his miracles, and his love for us! Amen!

  3. Father, we exalt your Holy Name! You are worthy to be praised! I’m a sinner who has been set free by accepting your salvation into my life in 1969! That is the year I became a believer and accepted you in my life. My goal in life is to live your Word daily, acknowledge your ways, and reflect the “light of the world” shining through you! I may not be able to see you, but I know you are always with me through any storm or celebration in my life. I am 100% , undoubtedly sure of this! You guide my days and life and for this I am truly and honorably grateful to be a child of the King. We exalt your Holy Name! You are worthy to be praised! I will serve you all of my days!

  4. Point #5 resonates the strongest with me. I continue to long to have a greater ability to recognize what the Lord is doing in my life and ministry. This requires an intimacy that comes as a result of sacrifice and sincere prayer!

  5. Amen. Thank you Jesus for You also became my Savior in 1969. May I live in Your words that say,
He has not left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to Him. And thank you that You forgive me when I wonder off in sin. And You bring me back to doing the things that please You. Thank you Jesus Amen.

  6. Father, teach me through your Word.

Lord Jesus, shine your light through me today.

Holy Spirit, fill me completely and use me in sowing good seeds.

    May the harvest be abundant.

And LORD, if you grant me tomorrow, let’s repeat.

  7. Holy Spirit, give us eyes to see. Past the physical. Past the literal. The religious leaders were enveloped in rules and traditions and thought they were so close to God but their hearts were so far. Lord, help me not to miss Your heart as I serve, lead, mother, work, pray. Please give us spiritual eyes to see. Amen.

  8. I want and purpose to live my life so that I reflect Him and it changes me from the inside out so that I live differently and it in turn affects and causes others around me to see it and seek God more themselves. I want to know Him deeper, to hear His voice constantly, know His word effectively and to walk beside Him in every moment. I’ve lived my own way and know what it’s like to not do those things I desire now. I have tasted and seen His way and I want no other. God let me always have an appetite for deeper connection with you. Desiring and thinking on heavenly things and not earthly things. Reflecting your character love and walking in the fruit of the spirit. Living, truly living. I don’t want the back and forth living anymore. Thank you Lord for your goodness mercy and grace in my life.

  9. How essential is forgiveness to the Christian life?
“For, if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your Heavenly Father will also forgive you?” Matthew 6:14

  10. Blessings abound when learning who God is & His wonderful ways!

“Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and how inscrutable His ways!”
    ‭‭Romans‬ ‭11‬:‭33‬ ‭

LORD, use me to make your truth, forgiveness, and hope known!

  11. TRUTH is a dynamic & freeing thing. The Word of GOD frees us from uncertainties, Scripture directs us to realities, pointing us to what is good & away from all that is wrong & harmful. As I practice GOD’s Words, I come to know truth in a personal way. JESUS is TRUTH & I’m blessed to have a personal relationship w/HIM. JESUS didn’t say; before Abraham was, I was; HE said I AM (ever present) GOD. HE IS the everlasting GOD, Creator of the whole earth & of course the Heavens. Ro.11:26; “For from HIM & through HIM & to HIM are all things, to HIM be the glory forever, Amen…

  12. Thank you Father for setting me free from sin and from the father of all lies, in Jesus’ name.

  13. Yes I am a sinner because one of the biggest sins is not spending time in his word.

I do see him as light of the world yes, just like star in City of David is the same way as Jesus is Light of The World.

I believe in the eternal I am

I do accept the fact that Act One on the inner conflict as man vs self is when Sin is on us, truthfully sin is a choice.

I recognize him as Jesus of my life and yes, he is part of my life.

I do think that anything creative should be part of giving him thanks.
