John 12

Mary Anoints Jesus at Bethany

Six days before the Passover, Jesus therefore came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. So they gave a dinner for him there. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at table. Mary therefore took a pound of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was about to betray him), said, “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it. Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that she may keep it  for the day of my burial. For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me.”

The Plot to Kill Lazarus

When the large crowd of the Jews learned that Jesus was there, they came, not only on account of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. So the chief priests made plans to put Lazarus to death as well, because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus.

The Triumphal Entry

The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!” And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written,

“Fear not, daughter of Zion;

behold, your king is coming,

sitting on a donkey’s colt!”

His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him. The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness. The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign. So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, the world has gone after him.”

Some Greeks Seek Jesus

Now among those who went up to worship at the feast were some Greeks. So these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” Philip went and told Andrew; Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. And Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.

The Son of Man Must Be Lifted Up

“Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father,   save me from   this hour’? But for this purpose I have come to   this hour. Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” The crowd that stood there and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.” Jesus answered, “This voice has come for your sake, not mine.  Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” He said this to show by what kind of death he was going to die. So the crowd answered him, “We have heard from the Law that the Christ remains forever. How can you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?” So Jesus said to them, “The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.”

The Unbelief of the People

When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them. Though he had done so many signs before them, they still did not believe in him, so that the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:

“Lord, who has believed what he heard from us,

and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”

Therefore they could not believe. For again Isaiah said,

“He has blinded their eyes

and hardened their heart,

lest they see with their eyes,

and understand with their heart, and turn,

and I would heal them.”

Isaiah said these things because he saw his glory and spoke of him. Nevertheless, many even of the authorities believed in him, but for fear of the Pharisees they did not confess it, so that they would not be put out of the synagogue; for they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God.

Jesus Came to Save the World

And Jesus cried out and said, “Whoever believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me. And whoever sees me sees him who sent me. I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness. If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day. For I have not spoken on my own authority, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment—what to say and what to speak. And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I say, therefore, I say as the Father has told me.”

Devotional

John chapter 12 is packed with foreshadowing, deep theological truths, and powerful words from Jesus, but verse 43 grasps the essence of John’s main idea of the chapter: glorification. John writes “…for they [unbelievers] loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God.” Lazarus glorified Jesus by seeking his presence, Martha glorified him through service, and Mary glorified him by anointing his feet. Most importantly, Jesus was glorified by The Father (v. 28).

Glory will be given; the question is: Are we focused on bringing honor and adoration to King Jesus or to ourselves?  There is a clear distinction in this passage between worldly value and spiritual value. If we are not careful, we can succumb to the pressure of prioritizing the things of this world which are here for a moment and gone the next. God desires followers whose hearts and affections are dedicated to his Kingdom. He doesn’t just desire this from us, but he designed us for it.

In what ways could your glorification or adoration be misplaced or under prioritized?

17 thoughts on “Day Twelve | Who is Jesus?

  1. Jesus came to give light, hope and salvation to me! I am so blessed and grateful beyond measure that i am His!

  2. Day after day we forget HIS mercy and goodness, GOD always remain attentive to us in that way we must glorify and give him adoration every time and every moment.

  3. I routinely forget of my heavenly kingdom. The one true sovereign state whose work should be my number one priority. I pray that I lift Jesus Christ in my heart and in my work daily.

  4. Sometimes just turning away from God and not seeking his face can already be misplaced alone. And because we turn to the world, he still turns to us and gives us grace. We must always continue to seek God and give grace to ourselves and others since we’re given grace daily! Amen!

  5. The displacement of glory and adoration comes a lot from placing a huge value on my feelings. I don’t think I intend to seek after or adore another “god” for betrayal sake, but it happens as a result when I don’t always feel the presence of God in my life “actively” working. However, my reason for being is to first honor and adore the one who gave me life, even when I don’t always “feel” like it.

    1. Amen and Amen. Oh Lord Jesus may our prayers be a sweet odor in Your house praising Your holy name. Resounding the cry “Hosanna”, Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord!!!!

  6. Help us Lord to deny ourselves more often than not. I seek to diminish what I want so I can be about what He wants me to do. A work in progress daily for sure…🙏🏾

  7. God does so much in our lives, but we neglect to witness the ‘small’ things because we worry about appearing crazy. We’re happy to give him glory when he wins a battle for a major illness. But what about when he promotes us at work even though we aren’t qualified? When he stretches our finances? Or when our car trouble happens in the garage instead of on a major freeway in the middle of summer. When we pray for help with our children, and through consistent prayer, things get better. I think we need to testify about everything. Sometimes we don’t want to keep saying God did it. … not so we can glorify ourselves. We have to make sure we glorify him at all times.

  8. “Father, glorify your name.”

“… for they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God.”

Lord, Your glory is the ultimate. You will be glorified. Please posture my heart in a way that spotlights You and seeks to bring You glory above myself.

  9. This was a very thought-provoking question for me and I found it took awhile to answer. My thoughts are such that He is the first one I should talk to in the morning and the last one I should talk to at night. Missing church services for other social interactions or weather predictions—I.e., family gatherings or a chance of rain making us miss important fellowship and worship with Him. Reading a book when that time could be used reading the Bible and growing in His Word. We must use every optimal minute of the day to glorify His name. I deliberately say the Lord’s Prayer each time I wash my hands in an effort to grow closer and talk to Him. I, along with you, exalt His Name at All Times. This is a small example of making sure I stay in His “lane” so to speak.

  10. Being busy can become a distraction for me.
When I get up ⬆️ in the morning, what are my first thoughts? Is it to bring My Father glory today? I desire that everyday. Dear Father that is my prayer. May I allow your Holy Spirit to work through me. I am ready to face whatever this day holds.

  11. Many times I’ve reasoned and rationalized my mind out of the miraculous. We can live in one of two mindsets..as if nothing is a miracle or as if everything is a miracle. I’ve since been of the latter mindset and it puts me in awe of His majesty and even though days grow dim I must dig deeper knowing that he is growing me closer and deeper in my faith. He is the great I AM the King of kings and Lord of lords and we are His.

  12. “Stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.” 1 Corinthians 15:58

  13. My ways of glorification is misplaced because I am not reading his word like I need to and that is indeed selfish of me to be that way.

I spend most of the time on my laptop talking to AI and playing on my laptop without making it into God’s word.
