Joshua 1:1-18

God Commissions Joshua

After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, the Lord said to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ assistant, “Moses my servant is dead. Now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, into the land that I am giving to them, to the people of Israel. Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given to you, just as I promised to Moses. From the wilderness and this Lebanon as far as the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites to the Great Sea toward the going down of the sun shall be your territory. No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life. Just as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you or forsake you. Be strong and courageous, for you shall cause this people to inherit the land that I swore to their fathers to give them. Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to do according to all the law that Moses my servant commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go. This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

Joshua Assumes Command

10 And Joshua commanded the officers of the people, 11 “Pass through the midst of the camp and command the people, ‘Prepare your provisions, for within three days you are to pass over this Jordan to go in to take possession of the land that the Lord your God is giving you to possess.’”

12 And to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh Joshua said, 13 “Remember the word that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you, saying, ‘The Lord your God is providing you a place of rest and will give you this land.’ 14 Your wives, your little ones, and your livestock shall remain in the land that Moses gave you beyond the Jordan, but all the men of valor among you shall pass over armed before your brothers and shall help them, 15 until the Lord gives rest to your brothers as he has to you, and they also take possession of the land that the Lord your God is giving them. Then you shall return to the land of your possession and shall possess it, the land that Moses the servant of the Lord gave you beyond the Jordan toward the sunrise.”

16 And they answered Joshua, “All that you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go. 17 Just as we obeyed Moses in all things, so we will obey you. Only may the Lord your God be with you, as he was with Moses! 18 Whoever rebels against your commandment and disobeys your words, whatever you command him, shall be put to death. Only be strong and courageous.”

  1. Dear Heavenly Father,
We are so thankful for your promise that you will never leave us or forsake us, just as you told Moses and Joshua. It is a wonderful truth that I cling to daily. Lead me today and make me an instrument for your glory. In Jesus name. Amen.

  2. In today’s passage, God told Joshua: “I will be with you. I will not leave you or forsake you.”

We face battles today, some physical and some spiritual. But we do not have to face them alone.

Father, be not far from those who cry out to you. Hear their pleas. Comfort, heal, provide, and lead us till we cross the Jordan River.

We, who are forgiven, do not stand alone.

Father, you are with us always.

    Amen

  3. Thank you Lord for Moses and Joshua who were so strong in the lord, but were sinners who walked in victory and not defeat. My the Lord bring comfort and hope to believers today as we walk through this crazy world. Moses and Joshua were examples for us of how God uses ordinary people to change the world.

  4. How forever blessed I am to have Your promise never to leave or forsake me , to know You are with me , so I need not fear, but I can be strengthened with the strength of Your might- as I keep trusting and obeying You.

  5. How we forget those simple words, I will be with you. Lord help me remember no matter how bad things seem, You are with me always!

  6. The Lord told Joshua 3x to be strong and courageous as he led the Israelites into the promised land. This applies to us also as we face so many difficulties in our journey.

  7. Lord Jesus thank you so much for this story of obedience which led to be strong and courageous. Oh help me Lord not to turn to the left or right but look straight ahead toward You in my obedience. And when I sin please forgive me. Thank you that You are always with me and that I can draw from Your strength when I am weak. In Your Name Jesus Amen.

  8. I will be strong and courageous. I will not be frightened or dismayed, for the Lord my God is with me wherever I go.”

  9. Heavenly Father, Thank you for being with me & never leaving me. You are a good & loving God. Thank you for all my blessings. In Jesus name, Amen.

  10. Thank you Lord for the reassurance that you are with me. Just as scripture reiterates 3 times just in this passage to Joshua, I must be strong and courageous. Face my fears with the strength and courage that comes from the Holy Spirit which dwells in me. Praise you dear Lord for your provision!

  11. “you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it”
I find myself busy and I fail to think about what is written in the Bible yet it should be the priority in my life.

  12. Thank you Lord for the reminder that You are always with me and not to be afraid or frightened.Amen.

  13. I was wondering where to find that scripture–Joshua 1:9 “I will never leave you or forsake you.” What a powerful promise! Thank you, God, that you are always there–in times of trouble and plenty.

  14. What must we DO
God’s Word shall not depart from our mouth, but we must meditate on it day and night.
Be careful to do according to all that is written in his word.
Our way will be prosperous and we will experience good success.
God commands us to be strong and courageous. He tells us not to be frightened and do not be dismayed, the Lord our God is with us wherever we go.
He is the best GPS, no need to update.
Walking in faith is what we are called to do, it’s definitely not easy, we depend on the human senses that God blessed us with, sight for one and our own understanding for the second.
God always raises up others to carry on his will. His work and purpose didn’t change just his vessels.
His power to deliver his promises is our strength and hope.
I would think Joshu’s mountain, although not as difficult as Moses’s still presented many perils.
Why is it so hard when we know his Word is true and he blesses the ground we stand on? Self will, that’s missed directed, choosing our intelligence over God’s Words of wisdom…OUCH!!
The people commented in word to follow God’s instructions and Joshua’s lead.
Lord God, I ask for wisdom, desire, commitment, and strength to live according to all that is written in your Word. Be merciful to me Lord and your people as we fall short…Amen!!

  15. I feel God is doing the same thing right now! He doesn’t leave us or forsaken! We have to have more faith and trust in Him and know Whatever happens HE is in control!
