Luke 4:14-30

Jesus Begins His Ministry

14 And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and a report about him went out through all the surrounding country. 15 And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. 17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
    because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovering of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

20 And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21 And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” 22 And all spoke well of him and marveled at the gracious words that were coming from his mouth. And they said, “Is not this Joseph’s son?” 23 And he said to them, “Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, ‘“Physician, heal yourself.” What we have heard you did at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.’” 24 And he said, “Truly, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown. 25 But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heavens were shut up three years and six months, and a great famine came over all the land, 26 and Elijah was sent to none of them but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 27 And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.” 28 When they heard these things, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath. 29 And they rose up and drove him out of the town and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him down the cliff. 30 But passing through their midst, he went away.

  1. Prophesy is being fulfilled even today but many won’t believe . We must open our eyes to the truth that Jesus is the only way the truth and the light. Thank you Lord for sending your son Jesus and open the eyes of your people. Amen.

    1. I am so blessed that you are in my life. You opened my eyes to your love and Praise. I’m a child of God. Amen and Glory be to our Lord and Savior✝🙏🏻✝🙏🏻💜💜

  2. This is a really difficult passage to understand. It seems like they’re trying to tell Jesus to perform miracles, but he says he won’t, and then he brings up the days of Elijah and Elisha, saying that in those times miracles were only performed on 1 person (essentially)

But then that drives everybody to throw him off a cliff? He wasn’t being blasphemous, and he wasn’t being disrespectful of the prophets. What would drive the mob to that kind of anger?

    1. We need to realize Christ is among us today in the form of the Holy Spirit. Do not quench the Spirit but welcome it.

    2. I thought that their problem with Jesus’ message was that he was saying Elijah and Elijah ministered to a Gentile woman from Sidon and an Gentile military commander from Syria. They were happy with him until that point.

    3. It is a difficult passage. Could it be saying that there are many who need Jesus (healing), but only few who truly believe. The ones who drove Him out had their own agenda in mind. It sounds like they wanted the healing more than Jesus.

    4. Todavía hoy estamos viendo la misma época Jesús te necesitamos abre los ojos 👀 a los ciegos y pon en libertad a los cautivos ayúdanos a reconocer que tu viniste por nosotros los pecadores .

    5. They were angry because they considered themselves the favored ones, God’s own children, but now this Jesus speaks of God showing favor to those of other nations that they consider inferior–so they are angry, believing that God’s blessings and favor are reserved for them, the children of promise. They are being introduced to John’s statement, “For God so loved the world…” not just one people group, but the whole world!

  3. Always amazing to me is how quickly they went from admiring Jesus to having outright contempt for Him. And the way that He disappeared is fascinating! Imagine the looks on their faces when He did so!

  4. …yes. And there is only one way in & out of mount precipice because the other 3 sides are cliffs…

A report went out about Jesus and what He had done in the Galilee region and in Capernaum. Were the crowds and those in this synagogue excited to hear about and see the miracles that were mentioned in the report? If I was one of them, would I have been too?

Were these people poor, captives, blind and/or oppressed? …and was it widely thought of at this time that the coming Savior would bring salvation only to the Jews?

“Physician, heal yourself.” Consider this in Luke 23:35 “And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God.”

    Prophecy fulfilled…

Thank You for Your word Father. Spirit, help us to understand it and apply it to our lives so that we may glorify You with it. Amen.

  5. I remember when my son went off to College & I was home alone, Wally said to me; you are genuine, authentic & a true believer in JESUS. I say that because you could do anything you want to do, or go anywhere you want to go but “as usual” you come every week & meet with your Church family. In Luke 4:14-30 it states in Vs. 16b “as usual HE entered the Synagogue on the Sabbath. That’s what HE did, “HE kept in touch w/HIS FATHER, HIS Word, & HIS people.” That has always been a part of HIS life. JESUS knew that doing miracles for people who didn’t believe or trust HIM wouldn’t change their minds. Elijah, & Elisha performed miracles & they were rejected but it resulted in the Gentiles receiving CHRIST because they were willing to act in faith listening to HIS Word. Yes they loved JESUS until HE spoke the truth & told them that grace would be with held from them & given to the Gentiles because of their unbelief. But if we want to experience HIS blessings, we have to embrace the unusual. GOD does things differently because HE wants to show us WHO HE is. We’re bless so we can spend more w/HIM in HIS Word & in prayer. (and my thoughts are too long) Sorry!!! I love HIM so much because HE loves me unconditional. To HIM, the only wise GOD WHO is able to keep me from stumbling & to make me stand in the Presence of HIS glory, w/o blemish & w/great joy, to the only GOD our SAVIOR through JESUS CHRIST our LORD, be glory, majesty, power, & authority before all time, now & forever. Amen… Jude 24. All the many years that I have been alone, gave me more time to read the Bible & other Books. I.m praising the LORD @ all time.

  6. This is an awesome passage. I believe its telling us not to be surprised when those that know you and know your work will turn against you for the sake of Cheist Jesus. Others accepted His miracles in other towns but his own people in His town did not believe. Because they new His parents. When he explained how only one in two situations were saved, I believe their eyes were open to the truth that their knowing Him as Joseph’s son cause their doubt and unbelief. God is telling us we must believe He is the Son of the Living God and it matters not who or what we think we know.

    Be blessed church

  7. We have just started to study the book of Isaiah in The Journey Class. We welcome all to come study with us Sunday mornings at 9:30 in room AE 302.

  8. Jesus started his ministry with a divine purpose. Preaching “The Good News.” We are created to worship God the Creator alone. Jesus read Isaiah 61, which was about Himself. The people in the synagogue of Galilee believed and accepted his teachings. But the people in Nazareth, Jesus’s home town did not accepted his teachings. They did not recognize him because He had been anointed by God. Although they read the scriptures, they were blind to the truth. The truth and Flesh had come together in Jesus, “Fulfilled.” He taught with authority. Jesus mission was to preach Good News to the poor, set the oppressed and captives free, give sight to the blind. Father God, anoint me with your Holy Spirit that I may join you in Jesus’s divine mission in the redemption of lost souls.
