Luke 4:1-13

The Temptation of Jesus

And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry. The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.” And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone.’” And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, and said to him, “To you I will give all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.” And Jesus answered him, “It is written,

“‘You shall worship the Lord your God,
and him only shall you serve.’”

And he took him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, 10 for it is written,

“‘He will command his angels concerning you,
    to guard you,’

11 and

“‘On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”

12 And Jesus answered him, “It is said, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” 13 And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him until an opportune time.

  1. As Jesus’ example, we must also stand firm against the devil. If we resist him, he will flee. Seek not the things of this earth that are only temporal and that rust and decay but lay up things in heaven that will last forever. Amen.

    1. When you are tempted, go to the Word. Hide this Word in your heart and call upon it to come to mind when temptation presents itself in any form.

      1. Another great reminder of how important it is to memorize scriptures; read it and know it well enough for you to call upon it when tempted and to use as comfort during trials.

      2. Lord when evil is tempting me I will rely on you and the word of God. Amen and Glory be to our Lord and Savior✝🙏🏻✝🙏🏻💜💜🙌🏻🙌🏻

  2. Jesus was tempted like we are, but he was full of the Holy Spirit. When we get full of the Holy Spirit
we will be able to resist the Devil and he will not have any power over us. God help us to follow the
command “Be filled with the Spirit.”
Thank you Lord Jesus for your example.

  3. Totally agree with Lane about going to God’s word when we are oppressed by satanic temptation. The key to victory is having His word in your heart/mind! Listen to Psalm119:9&11 paraphrased. How shall a young man keep his life pure & not give in to temptation? By listening to God’s word, thy word have I hid in my heart so that I may not sin against God! Memorize God’s word and in the power of the Holy Spirit it will help us resist the evil one!!

  4. Temptation. It is everywhere. Learning to stand against it and using what you have learned all these years in word, in Bible class and service are the key to this success. Thank you Lord for giving us the resources to fight against our main enemy.

  5. Our faith from knowing Gods word will allow us to tell satan to flee and he has to go. Knowing Gods word is key to overcomming temptation no matter what it is. Trust and believe the principles of the bible is what is needed today for our families to overcome the enemy’s deception.

    Be blessed church

  6. Pastor Wade is right about Memorizing the Word of GOD. There are two resources all believers have in facing temptations . Dr. Luke tells us in this chapter; “the Holy Spirit Who fills JESUS, & the Word which guides HIM, are both gifts GOD has given to us as well. It’s good to know that GOD is with us. We should never doubt HIS Presence. Plus Tony Evans said that Satan had three strikes (he’s out) for a while. Believers truly need to be connected in a L.G. to continue Bible Study so we too can combat Satan w/the Word of GOD. Pastor Scott’s sermon last Sunday was spot on. Don’t try to go to battle w/o spiritual preparation (jus saying). My goal is to be led by the HOLY Spirit & learn the the Word of GOD. Thank You JESUS for this lesson on how to resist the Devil. You must really love me. All praise & honor to YOU LORD, Amen Oh! Pastor Gary if you are reading this, thank you for telling me about the sermon & praying for me. You are one of the reasons I study Scripture; thank you for your friendship.

    1. Carol Glenn is a wonderful Bible student and great friend.
It is great to have friends that pray and support each other in times of need.

  7. Without a doubt, Satan is on the prowl today and appears to deceive and devour many. He doesn’t hide himself or his tactics. I pray for eyes to be opened and hearts to be receptive to the love of Jesus and the promises of His offer of salvation.
