Luke 5:1-11

Jesus Calls the First Disciples

On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking. They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken, 10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” 11 And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.

  1. Jesus meets us where we are and as we are. As his disciples , we must be willing to leave our old ways behind abd follow Him. Are we willing? I pray that wherever He leads , we’ll go. Amen.

    1. We need to be prepared to go when He calls and do what He asks of us when He says. By trusting in our Lord we can do great things!

      1. Gracias Señor por tu enseñanza por hacernos tus discípulos y invitarnos a seguirte y ser pescadores de hombres todo aquel que no te conoce y a que se haga tu voluntad ayúdanos a seguirte cada día y ser más obediente a tu palabra .

      2. I am ready for when he calls me to do the things he asks of me. Amen and Praise the Lord 🙏🏻✝🙏🏻✝💜💜

  2. How did they leave 2 boatloads of fish? That was more than they ever caught. It took courage to leave everything behind and speaks to the value of following Jesus. Thank you Jesus for a better life in You.

  3. Reminds me of Matt. 4:19. “Come follow me (invitation to obey) and I will make you to become (process of growth) fishers of men.”(blessings of obedience)

    1. Thanks for this reminder. Scripture articulates my part in the process…obey. Praying that when the Lord speaks, I hear, and when He moves, I see.

      1. By the way, these devotionals are exactly what I needed to read today. I am in Leviticus in my chronological, and although good, it was not ministering to my heart like this.

Reading the responses is another kind of fellowship and I feel truly blessed to have received this instruction from the Spirit.

  4. Throughout GOD’s Word, HE calls us into action in our own specific circumstances. WE lack information. GOD is Omniscience & can do the impossible, (like knowing where the fish are) HE blesses our obedience. Peter was like Isaiah was when he saw the Holiness of the LORD sitting on HIS Throne in all HIS glory, he said “woe is me for I am a sinner. ” That’s what happens when we are confronted w/the Holiness of GOD, our sinfulness is exposed. Now instead of catching fish for a living, Peter & the 1st. disciples will be fishing for people, & the same is true for me (us). We are meant to be a blessing (Be a blessing). All praise & glory belongs to GOD.

    1. Our sin is exposed so that we can ask for forgiveness and redemption in order to get closer to God. He so wants a relationship with us❤

  5. Witnessing (Evangelism) is when we become Fisher of Men.
Telling the story of our encounter with Jesus is –
One Beggar telling another Beggar where he found food (Bread of Life).
Follow HIM and He will make you a Fisher of Men.

  6. If we just learn to do what God tells us when He tells us because He sees and knows everything. I get confused when it is something He tells me to do that seems out of the ordinary and unbelievable. The deciples could not believe if they just change the side of the ship they were fishing on would lead to that much sucess. This is what God is saying today don’t give up or jump ship. just follow me and you will be successful in all you do.

    Be blessed church

  7. Not only did the fishermen follow the directions of Jesus, but I think the fish did too! Our Creator knows all things! We are to be close enough to Him to hear Him and follow His instructions.
