Buried in a Rich Man’s Tomb
Devotional by Nhora Medina
Read Isaiah 53:9, Matthew 27:57-60
Isaiah 53:9
And they made his grave with the wicked
and with a rich man in his death,
although he had done no violence,
and there was no deceit in his mouth.
Matthew 27:57-60
Jesus Is Buried
57 When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who also was a disciple of Jesus. 58 He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. 59 And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen shroud 60 and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut in the rock. And he rolled a great stone to the entrance of the tomb and went away.

Devotional
The fact that Jesus was crucified among criminals and died as if He were one of them led many to assume that He would also be buried as a criminal. However, God had already decreed through the prophet Isaiah that His Son’s body would be placed in the tomb of a rich man.
This prophecy was fulfilled when Joseph of Arimathea, a wealthy disciple, took Jesus’ body, wrapped it in clean linen, and laid it in his own new tomb (Matthew 27:57–60).
Why is this detail so important?
The Truthfulness of God’s Word:
Every word in Scripture is true. Even the smallest details of Jesus’ life and death were prophesied centuries before they happened, reminding us that God is sovereign over all of history.
The Innocence of Jesus:
While criminals were buried without honor, Christ—though crucified as a criminal—was given a dignified burial. This highlights His righteousness: He committed no sin, yet bore the sins of humanity (2 Corinthians 5:21).
The Hope of Resurrection:
The borrowed tomb symbolizes temporality and transition. Jesus did not remain in death; He rose again, overcoming the grave. His victory over death fills us with hope and assures us of the promise of eternal life for all who trust in Him.
Have you ever stopped to reflect on the immeasurable love of God in sending His innocent Son to bear our sins? As you consider this divine mystery, I invite you to renew your faith and trust that—just as God fulfilled His Word in Jesus’ burial—He will fulfill all His promises in your life.
Action Step:
The Saturday between Good Friday and Resurrection Sunday invites us to sit in the stillness between the sorrow of the cross and the joy of the resurrection. Today, resist the urge to rush ahead. Instead, pause and lean into the quiet.
Take a deep breath and pray this simple prayer of trust:
“Lord, thank you for your perfect plan. Help me to trust your promises and timing, knowing that you are always faithful. Amen.”
God is perfect. Though heartbreaking that the Lord had to experience horrific pain for me its Gods plan just as we are in God’s perfect plan. Amen.
Father God gave us his precios son so that his will would be fufilled. Jesus obeyed and with obedience our sins were wiped away with His suffering and blood. I am in awe of the tremendous love I was and am given today! Thank you Jesus!
Lean into the quiet…
“Lean into the quiet… ” WELL SAID! Thank you, Neil.
Psalm 46:10. Be still and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen. I will be exalted in the earth.
Just pause and be in silence and solitude as God works behind the scenes on our behalf. No need to stress and worry and rush incessantly. God’s perfect plan is always at work. It’s as the song says: It is done. It is finished, no more debt I owe. Paid in full, all-sufficient merit now my own
It is done, it is finished, no more debt I owe.
Paid in full, all-sufficient merit now my own
Praise our Lord and Saviour for all that he endured in fulfilling God’s Plan!
Thank you Father God for provision. Your faithfulness and love toward your creation is boundless. Thank you for Your Son and our Savior Jesus. We can always be confident that You will take care of every detail of our lives. Let us receive the abundance of your love for us this day. Amen🙏🏾
I thank God for His perfect love, I am a sinner and yet He pardoned me by giving his Son to die for us. Jesus my Lord stay with me that I will have strength to carry carry me through this days Amen
Thank you graciously God for the resurrection of your Son, Jesus Christ. For without Jesus we would have died with our sins and never seen heaven. Thank you God for the mercy tree.
What were the disciples doing the day between the crucifixion and the resurrection? Did they really expect Jesus to arise?
Good question, I would imagine they didn’t, which is just incredible to think about. The people who walked and lived with Jesus didn’t even struggled with faith and belief. Like the Israelites who walked through parted waters, or Peter walking on water, yet still lost faith. It’s so easy to take our eyes off the Lord here in this broken world. Great reminder.
The Lord doesn’t miss a detail – He’s ordained it all to fulfill His perfect plan. Whether I feel like it or not, I can trust every aspect of my life and know that He’s purposed it for a story yet to be revealed.
We sit in stillness today to look back and reflect on, not just our lives but on the life of the one who gave us life! Sunday is coming! ✝️
PRAISE THE LORD AND HALLELUJAH!! YES!! SUNDAY IS COMING!! ✝🕊🙏📖
I sit in stillness today thanking the Lord for His perfect redemption of my life. Today, I lay my wayward granddaughter at His feet asking Him to restore her to Himself. He’s the only One Who can.
“I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me.” Galatians 2:20
The quietness will give you peace and help you refocus your mission in life, that being finding God’s true pathway as you why you were created.
It’s not easy to comprehend the ways of My Heavenly Father…to know the events from the beginning of time that would unfold in the future…but what a wonder that He chose to have those events recorded in His Word so long before they happened. Proof that He is the Creator and in control!
God gave His Only Son for me and for you! What excruciating agony for a Father to watch His Son die the way He died! How can we ever comprehend the depth of God’s love for us? It is life-changing, never ending, overwhelming, unconditional love. Thank You, Lord for Your amazing gift of love and salvation!
What would we have without the resurrection? Our faith would be worthless. No forgiveness for our sins. No salvation. No eternal life. Christ victory over death gives us our hope for eternal life. Redemption. Thank you, Father God for your love, your protection, your provision, and your promises.
Thank you Jesus for your sovereignty, righteousness and victory over death.
Thank you Jesus, Thank you GOD for your love Amen 🙏
Praisalleluyah!!! Sunday is coming; be still & sit in silence.
HE is RISEN.
The Old Testament clearly and specifically prophesied the life, death, burial and resurrection of the Son of God. Jesus Christ fulfilled that prophesy -specifically in every detail and as such is without a doubt the Son of God …
As Terry & Steven talked about above, I agree Jesus’s disciples were not expecting Him to rise again like Lazarus. Their paralyzing fear had them hiding, quaking, focusing on every sound as if Roman soldiers were coming for them next. They’d seen the agony of Jesus on the cross & they wanted no part of it. Maybe not even Mary His mother was remembering that Her son clearly said He would come alive in 3 days. May I learn to read Jesus’s words again & again when rattling emotions seem to take over my thoughts, pulling me away from God’s written truth. Praise His Holy Name.
